A Random Number and Neuroscience

by Eric Drexler on 2008/12/18

My favorite random number generator evaluated the expression (+ 1 (random 47)) to the value “2”: Andy McKenzie, please send email me a suitable address (see the About page), and I’ll send you the book promised in the giveaway.

Andy suggested discussing potential applications of nanotechnology to neuroscience and noted a 2007 article in the journal Neuroscience that reported the use of carbon nanotubes as electrical interfaces to cultured nerve cells. I expect neuroscience to be an important area of application for a range of nanotechnologies, for at least two basic reasons:

  1. The scale of nanostructures is a good fit to the scale of the structures in neural tissue.
  2. Nanotechnologies provide ways to control surface structures at the molecular scale, and this will be of great importance in developing stable and effective interfaces to cells.

A range of future topics will offer opportunities to describe applications in neuroscience. Thanks to you all, and I’ll say more in future posts about topics raised in other comments.
