Learning Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics is huge, growing, fast, and has a surprising range of applications to molecular systems engineering. Here’s a PLoS article: “A Quick Guide for Developing Effective Bioinformatics Programming Skills”. From the abstract:

Dear Dr Drexler,

Thank you for answering my questions in the previous post,

1) I think, from your comments, the key for the creation of a molecular manufacturing machine is therefore the ability to acquire proper funding and support to do focused research. As of now, we have (or in my case will have) the attributes and qualities intellectually for development but what we lack is the ability to obtain, basically, money; not because these great visions are unachievable (in fact they are very achievable) but because investors see them as something that would be objects of the very distant future and do not have the imagination to digest the possibility of molecular manufacturing in their life time…is this correct?

2) Do you think molecular manufacturing will be able to build something like a car? I personally believe (and hope it can as I do not have the necessary knowledge at this point) they can and I have read EoC in which yourself described how this might be done. However, I’ve heard (by asking) many professors about the possibility of this and the general comment is it can not be done like you have said, could you enlighten my understanding of this revolution in which I truly believe in but unable to find the necessary answers to their claims?
